Tips to Help Your Baby’s Upset Stomach

If your baby is experiencing stomach pain it might be initially daunting to think about ways you can help. Sometimes it’s even hard to figure out if their stomach is the culprit. Having indigestion or eating too quickly can cause stomach pain that will lead to your baby refusing to eat, acting fussy, vomiting, or having diarrhea. Stomach pain is pretty common and luckily there are some things you can try to help ease their tummy ache.

Infant Massage:

You can gently rub their tummy in a clockwise motion while they are laying on their back. Then move your hands down the curve of the belly. Repeat this process several times. This helps to move any trapped gas in your baby’s tummy.

Bicycle Legs:

Parents might already be familiar with this move from your at home workouts. Using a similar technique, bend your baby’s legs back and forth towards their tummy helps them to release the gas trapped inside

Smaller Feedings:

It’s easy for babies to drink too much of whatever breastmilk or formula they’re enjoying. Giving your baby smaller meals will help give their tummy’s more time for digestion which should reduce their pain

Burp Your Baby Often:

It’s commonly recommended to burp your baby after feeding to help them release any air they might have swallowed while feeding. But burping your baby while they are feeding can help reduce their gas even more. After your little one feeds for about three to five minutes, take a break and burp them before they go back for more.

Tummy Time:

Allowing your baby to have tummy time each day is a great way to help strengthen their muscles. It’s also a great way to put pressure on their stomachs to help push out any trapped gas. Try to give your baby three to five minutes of tummy time three times a day. Just make sure that you wait at least 30 minutes after feeding to start so that their stomach has time to settle

Even though it can be scary to know that your baby is experiencing stomach pain, it’s good to know that it is very common and there are many ways you can help relieve their pain. What has helped the most when your little one is having tummy trouble?
